For sure, the New Jersey rapper, Coi Leray is a trendsetter. She rocks her braids and they have blown up to the point women all over are embracing this protective style.

While Coi Leray-inspired braids are such a summer-perfect, protective hairstyle, they can be worn all year long. Ideally, ‘Coi Leray braids‘ are knotless, jumbo-style box braids with curly and whirly ends. They have clean and neat parts and, feature neatly laid edges to add spice to the look.
While Coi Leray loves her braids in black and short ( ideally, at neck length), feel free to explore longer braids and switch up braid colors.

This trendy protective hairstyle is for sure very effortlessly chic and flattering, but most importantly, very versatile that kids can wear too.
Apart from the curls, its knotless feature makes this braid style worth it.

Unlike regular braids where a knot is made to secure the braid tightly to your hair, in knotless braids, the hairstylist starts the braid using your own hair and gradually feeds in the braiding hair as they move along the braid strand.
The lack of a knot in knotless braids makes the braiding experience tension-less, and pain-free. It also ensures the braid has a flatter appearance on the head and reduces hair breakage down the line, especially along the edges.

Coi Leray braids take less time to install and are light in weight, so if you have a problem waiting for so long to get your hair fully braided at the salon, this is one of the best protective hairstyles to try.
In fact, you can install them at home by yourself. Here’s how…

How to Do Coi Leray Braids

Now that you know what Coi Leray braids are, it’s time to learn how to create Coi Leray braids at the comfort of your home.
Follow our step-by-step tutorial to create a Coi Leray inspired braid masterpiece with ease.
1. Start with Fresh Hair Strands
Even before starting your braiding experience, you always want to start with clean and fresh hair strands. Do your hair routine to ensure your scalp is clean and your hair is well moisturized.
This will help prevent any itching so your Coi Leray braids can last longer. Use the First Aid Beauty Anti-Dandruff Shampooif you have dry hair and the Devacurl Conditioner to start things off on the right note. Remember to always use a soft microfiber towel to dry your hair gently.
2. Detangle & Blow Dry Your Hair
Once your hair is clean, free your hair of any knots or tangles using a wet brush detangling comb as well as the Mizani leave-in conditioner to smoothen the process.
The Mizani hair conditioner also acts as a heat protectant so you don’t have to spend more money in acquiring another heat protectant.
To blow-dry the hair, I use the Conair hairdryer which also comes with a pick comb, diffuser, and concentrator. Just be gentle and do a quick but not full blowdry so it’s easy to plait your Coi Leray braids.
TIP: If you frequently travel the world, you might have noticed that your electronic devices like hair dryers might blow up due to the differences in voltage.
So, use a Travel Adapter and Converter (I use this one from Amazon) to convert voltage to your device’s specifications and protect your hairdryer.
3. Part Your Hair as Desired
Section your clean, dry, stretched, and moisturized hair into thick and clean parts(either in a box or triangle shape) using a rat tail comb.
Depending on the number of braid strands you want on your head, divide accordingly.
Hair Tip…
To get very clean parts, apply the Shine n Jam Conditioning Hair Gel on the scalp after you do a section to hold the hair real good. This gel can also be used to lay the edges.
4. Moisturize your Hair & Braid It

To make your hair strands moisturized so it’s easy to braid, apply your favorite hair cream. Start braiding your hair, and feed in braiding hair just a few weaves from the root of your hair strands, little by little till you achieve your desired length.

Since Coi Leray braids are spiced up by curls and swirls at the ends, leave some unbraided hair at the tip and hold with a rubber band to ensure the braids don’t loosen up.
5. Curl the Ends

Use perm rods to curl around the unbraided hair ends before dipping them in hot water for a few minutes. Now dry out your braid strands using your soft hair towel.
Apply mousse using a golf ball-sized amount and spread from the roots to the ends. This gives some hold and definition to strands, as well as protects and tame your hair, and ensures curls don’t unravel.
6. Lay your Edges & Spray a Little

Make your Coi Leray braids super chic by laying your edges as you prefer using an edge control.
Once your braids have fully absorbed the mousse, it’s time to finish things off with a mist of shine-boosting hairspray.
